Black in Panama:
The 2026 Travel Guide

The canal the Caribbean built, Congo culture, and 180 days visa-free.

Why Panama

Panama may be the most underrated Black-history destination in the hemisphere. Tens of thousands of West Indian workers — mostly Barbadian and Jamaican — dug the canal, and their descendants shaped the country: Congo culture on the Caribbean coast is UNESCO-recognized, Colón is an Afro-Caribbean city, and Panama City’s Casco Viejo mixes colonial squares with Afro-Panamanian rhythm. Add Bocas del Toro — islands settled by Afro-Antillean families, now Panama’s laid-back beach escape — direct US flights and the US dollar, and it makes an easy first trip to our Latin America coverage.

Entry Rules for US Passports
(checked October 12, 2026)

No visa for stays under 180 days — the most generous rule in the region. Your passport needs 3 months’ validity beyond arrival. Bring proof of $500 (cash, cards or statements) and a return or onward ticket — the ticket rule is strictly enforced at check-in. The US State Department rates Panama Level 2 of 4, Exercise Increased Caution (crime; issued August 19, 2026). The Level 4 zones — the Mosquito Gulf and parts of the Darién — are remote wilderness, far from anywhere tourists go.

Plan Your Trip

Best months: mid-December through April is the dry season; the green season (May–November) still works, with mornings usually clear. Cost of a week: about $700–$1,200 per person mid-range. Panama uses the US dollar, so there is no exchange math; $60–$100 gets a good Panama City hotel, meals $6–$15. Where to stay: Panama City — Casco Viejo for charm, El Cangrejo or San Francisco for value; Bocas del Toro — Isla Colón for the main town, Bastimentos for Afro-Caribbean roots. Getting around: Uber works well in Panama City and the Metro is clean and cheap; Bocas is a short domestic flight; the canal’s Miraflores visitor center is a 30-minute ride from downtown. Safety: the tourist zones are among the calmer capitals in the region — watch for pickpockets in crowded markets, skip Colón’s back streets outside the cruise port and train station, and never attempt the Darién.

Quick Answers

Is Panama safe for Black travelers? Level 2 of 4 — the same tier as Brazil and much of Europe. Afro-Panamanians are a large share of the population, so Black travelers draw no particular notice; normal big-city rules apply. How long can Americans stay? Up to 180 days with no visa — bring a passport valid 3 more months, proof of $500 and an onward ticket (enforced). What is the Black history here? The canal was largely built by West Indian labor, and their Afro-Antillean descendants shaped Colón, Río Abajo and Bocas; Congo culture — music, dance and dress born in resistance to slavery — is on UNESCO’s heritage list. Best time to visit? Mid-December to April for dry season; shoulder months are cheaper and still good. What currency does Panama use? The US dollar (locally the balboa, 1:1) — US cards work widely in the city.
