In this personal journey, one Black American shares how Kenya became the country that completely changed the way he looked at travel, relationships, culture, and even himself.

From exploring the busy streets of Nairobi to relaxing on the white sands of Diani Beach, riding camels along the Indian Ocean, experiencing Swahili culture in Lamu, and building lifelong friendships, Kenya became much more than another passport stamp. It became a place he considers home.

Arriving in Nairobi Changed Everything

The journey began after years of traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

After finally receiving his passport in 2020, the creator realized there was an entire world waiting to be explored. Because of his father's strong connection to Black history, he felt called to visit Africa, eventually choosing Kenya as his first destination.

Landing in Nairobi became one of the most emotional moments of his life.

Growing up in Ohio, traveling to Africa wasn't something many people around him had experienced. Walking through Nairobi for the first time gave him a sense of accomplishment and excitement that he says is difficult to describe.

Meeting local friend Wangeci made the experience even more meaningful. Having someone on the ground who genuinely cared about his experience helped him quickly feel comfortable navigating the city.

Nairobi Offers More Than Most Travelers Expect

His first days in Nairobi were filled with experiences that challenged many of his expectations.

He explored Maasai Market, one of Nairobi's best-known shopping destinations, where he purchased souvenirs while experiencing the city's busy atmosphere. Being surrounded by so many Black people from different backgrounds created a feeling he had rarely experienced before.

He also visited the popular Kilimanjaro Restaurant, although he laughs about ordering burgers and fries instead of local dishes during his first visit.

That would soon change.

As the trip continued, his appreciation for Kenyan food expanded dramatically. He discovered chapati, samosas, sweet bananas, and other local dishes that completely changed his eating habits.

A Safari Unlike Anywhere Else

No trip to Kenya feels complete without experiencing a safari.

The creator visited Nairobi National Park, one of the only national parks located within the boundaries of a major city. Waking before sunrise, he boarded a safari vehicle and spent the morning searching for wildlife.

Although lions remained elusive, he encountered buffalo, zebras, crocodiles, rhinos with their young, and countless species of birds.

The experience reminded him that stepping outside of his comfort zone often produces life's greatest rewards.

Diani Beach Became a Turning Point

After Nairobi, the journey continued to Kenya's coast.

Flying to Diani Beach introduced him to what he describes as the most beautiful beach he has visited anywhere in the world.

Crystal-clear water, soft white sand, tropical weather, and palm trees created an unforgettable setting.

During his stay, he enjoyed fresh seafood, authentic Swahili cuisine, beachfront resorts, local entertainers, and camel rides along the Indian Ocean.

One moment stood above all the others.

While riding a camel beside the ocean with palm trees lining the coast, he realized he could never return to living life exactly as he had before. Travel had permanently changed his perspective.

Learning Through Culture

Throughout multiple trips to Kenya, the creator focused on learning from local communities rather than simply sightseeing.

He visited Kibera, one of Africa's largest informal settlements, where he met residents who welcomed him into their community.

Local families invited him into their homes to prepare traditional meals together, teaching him recipes and sharing stories about Kenyan life.

He also explored Eastleigh, Nairobi's Somali neighborhood, where he learned about Muslim culture, shared meals from a communal platter, and even visited a mosque.

These experiences taught him that many cultures emphasize sharing, hospitality, and community in ways he had never experienced growing up.

Lamu Showed Another Side of Kenya

One destination surprised him more than almost anywhere else.

Lamu.

Unlike Nairobi, Lamu operates at a much slower pace. Cars are almost nonexistent, with donkeys remaining one of the primary forms of transportation throughout the island.

He explored narrow streets, sampled authentic Swahili cuisine, interacted with local residents, and even discovered what he jokingly describes as some of the best ice cream he has ever tasted.

According to the creator, anyone visiting Kenya should consider adding Lamu to their itinerary because it offers a cultural experience completely different from the country's larger cities.

Returning Again and Again

Kenya didn't become a one-time destination.

He returned multiple times, strengthening friendships, celebrating birthdays in Mombasa, exploring Watamu, and even undergoing specialized Afro-textured hair transplant procedures in Nairobi after deciding against traveling to Turkey.

Each visit deepened his connection to the country.

He describes Kenya as a place where he consistently felt respected, welcomed, and appreciated.

Rather than simply returning for tourism, he continued building relationships with people who had become lifelong friends.
